Opened in the heart of Polanco in 2013, Museo Jumex is a contemporary art museum funded by one of the largest juice companies in Mexico, Grupo Jumex. The building was designed by David Chipperfield Architects. Colección Jumex contains works from Andy Warhol, Martin Kippenberger, Cy Twombly, and Damien Hirst; it is one of the largest private contemporary art collections in Latin America. Mediums range from paintings and drawings to light and video installations.

The MUAC is a 14,000-square-foot contemporary art museum on the grounds of Mexico City’s largest public university designed by architect Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon. It houses a collection of contemporary Mexican artwork from the 1950s onwards, ranging from paintings and drawings to video and sound installations.

The Folk Art Museum (Museo de Arte Popular) in the historic center of Mexico City has a diverse collection of folk art and handicrafts in Mexico, such as pottery and textiles. This is a great place to learn about the indigenous peoples of Mexico through their creative masterpieces.

Since its inauguration in 1981, the Tamayo Museum has presented the most significant modern and contemporary art in Mexico and abroad. This famous museum is in the middle of Chapultepec Park, and Rufino Tamayo (1899–1991) is one of the most renowned artists of the second half of the twentieth century.
Born in the state of Oaxaca to a family with Zapotec roots, Tamayo sought to create paintings in “the Mexican tradition,” distancing himself from the political and nationalist movements that dominated Mexican art after the Revolution. His exploration of painting as an aesthetic and spiritual activity distinguished him from his contemporaries, such as Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco, who focused on communicating social and political messages.

La Casa Azul is the intimate universe of Frida Kahlo. This artist lived most of her life in this beautiful residence; first with her family, and years later, with Diego Rivera. It didn’t take long after this for interesting Mexican and foreign visitors to stay in this area as well, attracted by the captivating couple of artists. Frida wanted to leave her home as a museum, to be enjoyed by her beloved Mexico. For this reason, after her death, Diego organized the Frida Kahlo museum here in the home she cherished so deeply.
Since the Museum’s inauguration in July 1958, the Blue House exhibits the ambiance that inspired Frida for her creation, as well as her personal belongings. Along with paintings by both artists, are displayed remarkable popular art pieces, pre-Columbian sculptures, photographs, documents, books, and furniture.

THIRFT LIKE A LOCAL
The best vintage shopping in Mexico City starts with none other than the famous “Tianguis de Antigüedades de la Lagunilla”! However, if you want to thrift like a local, don’t show up on any other day but Sunday! You’ll find yourself out of luck.
The tianguis, or open-air market, is your best bet for vintage finds in Mexico City. This incredible antique market only happens on Sundays. Dating back over 400 years, this market originally stocked only antiques and vintage items but has evolved over the years to offer a huge selection of clothing, housewares, jewelry, and accessories. You can find anything from incredible art pieces to fur coats, and vintage jewelry as well as some of the best street food in the city.
It simply isn’t a visit to Mexico City without checking out this famous market. Before you head back to one of Mexico City’s boutique hotels, be sure to check out all of the amazing things at this market. You’ll be surprised at what you might find!

Luis, one of the owners, says that they want their food to have the “Garnachera vibe” but with 100% vegan products and they’re accomplishing that every day!
